self-articulation around a world without borders

a scifi story set in a vast forest where people live based on solely on language. if you can speak many languages, you can travel many places, etc. inhabitants who venture into lands where they cannot communicate with those around always end up in fatal situations.

many blame the trickster fae that zag from tree to tree to toy with travelers cheshire-cat style. fae are nice enough-- you'll receive a wicked warning for being too far from those you cannot communicate with. but they are not the danger-- the environment around you recognizes you as a foreign contaminant unless you can prove you can commune with life (the flora, fauna, terra, and aqua) on this new land around you.

the way that this is determined is mysterious and almost magical. though most folk in the forest are not able to travel far, life is sustainable and generative through a healthily symbiotic relationship to the land, cultivated over generations-old spiritual beliefs and ritual practices that communicates with the same magic of the forest.
